Just Purchased Used '98 Z3--Help! (archive)

Hi: I just purchased a '98 Z3 (basic model) with about 50,000 miles on it. I'm having two problems with the car and I want to know if these are common things or not. First, my "check engine" light came on the day after I purchased it. What could that be related to? Also, there are (many) times when I put the key in the ignition and the key will turn 360 degrees over and over without starting the engine. Is there something wrong with that or is it some kind of security feature? Thanks in advance for any insights that you have--I have a short-term warranty so I'd like to get these things figured out relatively quickly.
