Seatbelt tensioner on Z3s sometimes is/becomes defective, and sticks in one position or another. It is a very well known warranty issue, and numerous folks on this board have had the units replaced, including me in my '99 2.3.

It is advisable to have the work done, as sometimes the belt will NOT release from the 'closed' position, and then you will be driving beltless. Dangerous, and costly, at least around here. The fix is a pretty quick one, and the parts have been readily available. Have it looked at, while the repair cost is on BMW's nickel.
