Assuming your 1st design is the screen type, then you are correct - it cannot be folded down when the top is up. But, it can be easily removed and stored in the trunk. I leave mine on year-round and there is very little visbility impact. Those with both kinds can better answer which type is most effective, but it may be a preference thing.
