I have driven both the Audi and Porsche tiptronic transmissions and they feel like they sap massive power from the cars. In those cases, I would only buy the manual.

While I haven't tried BMW's steptronic, I can't imagine it is an improvement over Porsche's solution, so I suggest you either:

(a) Test drive a used manual and new steptronic in immediate succession to help you decide. You have to keep in mind that the 3.0 and 2.8 differ markedly in power and torque, which will cloud your comparison.

(b) Wait for a manual transmission equipped car. It will be worth the wait and you'll save $1200.

'Course that just my lowly opinion. Good luck with it.
