Not sure where you are, but a majority of Z3s around here come with manual transmissions - and M Roadsters don't even offer anything else. There are a few Z3 folks who like their automatics, but most of us think the greater control of a manual is the only way to go in a car like this.Not sure exactly what you mean by "steptronic," but I don't think BMW's auto is set up with the one-up/one-down shifter function (like Porsche's tiptronic). In Europe, BMW offers a true clutchless manual transmission on M3s, but BMW doesn't offer it at all in the U.S. Even in Europe, I don't think they offer it on any Z3s.
I don't think most of us care about the $1200 - it depends on how you like to drive.
