Just got a '01 2.5 Sport/Premium. Catch was it has to have an auto because my wife puts about 2/3 of the miles on it. The Stepronic is a total misnomer. All you are really doing is making suggestions to the damn thing. It will not hold a gear worth a crap. It kicks down even when you dont want it to (i.e. wet pavement). Micht as well leave it in Drive.

If you have *any* way to find a manual, do it. Most dealers are willing to source off other lots. Better yet, check with a regular poster on the E39 board. He's at Cutter Motors in CA, but will ship anywhere. I think his name is John Shafer (sp). He seems to have a lot of satisfied customers on the 5-er board.

I've recently shopped around for a 2001 Z3, but, finding
a 5 spd manual to be very difficult. Most on the lot or
in production are steptronic. I would like to avoid
paying the $1200 or so for this option. Anyone with
thoughts between the two trannys?
Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Doug
