I am guessing you're in the East coast, so this may not be a good option for you. I'm in CA, I got my 97 2.8 with 30k miles in LA in 2000 Dec. I went to a corporate auction (where only car dealers are allowed to attend) with my friend, who is a dealer. He charged me $500 for choosing and bidding a good z3 for me.
I ended up paying $19500 + tax + $500 fee for the car. The car is perfect, good engine and origional paint.
