I drive the 5sp Step, and I have made clear my opinion many times that it is my preference, and that it is a wonderful system of getting power to the rear wheels. In my biased way, I will try to point out the advantages of each. Manual - $1,275 cheaper. Auto - In stop and go traffic this is a no brainer, you will never cause damage to your engine because of overreving because the computer will not permit a downshift if you are not in the proper rev range for the lower gear, in the M mode you can use it just like a stick and not be concerned that the rev limiter will shut off your gas supply, because the computer will upshift for you in any mode, and in the drive and sport mode you can force downshifts via the throttle by blipping the accellerator. This nonsense about better control is just that-nonsense. Posts that allude to this are made by people who have no concept of what the modern day computer driven auto is like, and certainly they do not know how to use one properly. The auto will downshift much faster than any manual, and this is not an opinion, this is factual. I have learned to brake left footed, and I am on the brake much faster than anyone driving a stick. So explain to me how a stick has more control. Don’t be bothered by the “real men don’t eat quiche” type posts. I track my car as much as I can, and as a former race car driver who cut his eye teeth on sports cars in the early 50’s and is totally familiar with downshifting, I can tell you I am having more fun with my auto than I ever did with my stick.
