You decide when you want stuff to happen, instead of doing it when the computer decides. Blipping the throttle to get the car to downshift is like buying a goat to prune your hedges - it'll work, but not in a very precise fashion. And the last thing in the world I want from the engine computer is for it to suddenly decide to change gears as the engine nears redline as I'm going around some corner.

Modern automatics are an improvement, but let's not exaggerate.
