I did not like the automatic upshift when near the redline, but for me this only occurs on the racetrack. I have never had this happen while running my canyons. As to throttle downshifting, I disagree completely. I find it very precise, and I can do it much faster than you can downshift with you stick. Your simile gave me a laugh, but not because of its accuracy.
