Patrick,
In KS the private sale BUYER owes sales tax on whatever the bill of sale provided by the private sale SELLER says (since you're the lawyer I'm sure you can see the obvious not-quite-legal practice this opens the door to which is common between friends or relatives to reduce the amount of sales tax).

But generally speaking there's no "wash" afaik so you LOSE benefit of "only the difference" sales tax that you get trading at a dealership --and you can be sure the dealer lobby intends to keep it that way. Since I take better-than-average care of vehicles I usually come out considerably better in spite of it by selling to individuals rather than trading. So I only trade when I just don't want to go through the hassle of selling a particular vehicle outright. Since I don't lease I can't answer any questions regarding that, but once you pay the buyout on an off-lease car then it's simply your property same as if you bought it from the start. So can't see how there would be any issues at all there.

Hope you enjoy the M3 as much as the Z3!
