I went with a Dinan supercharger on my '98 2.8 last November. Had the local BMW dealer's motorsports dept install. It's a bit pricey, but you get the entire package...including fuel injectors and software. According to Dinan, their supercharger won't fit 2.8's made after a certain date (Aug '98 I believe).
After the install, you'll need to re-learn the power curve of the engine. Below 3500rpm the application of power just feels smoother. Above 3500 in the lower gears...hang on! Gas mileage went down a bit and you can hear the whine of the supercharger, but those are minor considerations (to me anyway).
I'm running AVS sports, and the extra grip comes in handy. You'll also need to disengage the traction control to get the full effect.
I've installed Dinan upgrades to the suspension, throttle body and exhaust, and I'm pleased with the results. Clutch and brakes are next. Hope this helps your decision.
