The truth is, that I'd be embarassed to go drive because I don't know anything and worry that I'd drive right off the course into a tree and everyone would have a good laugh!

I went to driving schools before I went to AX and they're not really the same thing.

The best thing to do is just suck it in and go to an AutoX. Walk up to the registration booth and announce "Hi! I'm a complete novice at this and I need as much help as I can get!" In my area (Philly) everyone's real nice to beginners because we want as much participation as we can get. It helps if you have a helmet (open face is OK, Snell 95 or newer required). I've attached a link to the Philly novice page to get you started. Remember to bring a hat, suntan lotion, chapstick, some $$$, and lots of water.

If you haven't AutoX'd before I can't recommend it enough. I'm kicking myself for not getting into this a decade ago. One, because I missed a lot of cheap fun and two, because I'd be one decade better by now (I suck). Also, it's completely changed my attitude towards fast cars and driving on the streets.
