BMW Z3 Battery Problem (archive)

I have a 2000 Z3 2.3 and the battery has gone stone dead 2x. After getting ripped off by a BMW dealer in Turnersville, NJ (who will remain nameless) for a $165.00 fee to tell me that my aftermarket Alpine (BTW, it is the same product item that BMW sells...) CD changer was causing an unusual draw (not true, I will get to that). I disconnected the unit, and it died again. I spoke with Bell BMW, and because it is winter, and I don't drive the car, the battery will "in fact" die every 3 weeks because the computers in the car draw current while it is not running. The remedy is this... BMW sells a "trickle" charger that plugs into your cigarette lighter (at a cost of $69.00) and will keep your battery fresh no matter how long it is between drives. Incedentally, the service department says that you have to idle for 2 hours to compensate for 1 weeks no use, and 1 start of the engine. If you drive it, you can get away with a 1/2 hour ride. The manual actually does state that if you don't drive it for 4 weeks, you have to disconnect the battery... I think the whole thing is a bunch of crap if you ask me, but it does work....
