That design made some engineering decisions necessary. To get the lines to look as they do, it was required that the top go down, and store itself, in a certain way. Integral to that design was that the rear window HAS to fold on itself...no other choice, if the car is to look like it does.
Om a more philosophical level, this is a performance roadster -- that means CONVERTIBLE. Its inherent design intention is to be driven with the top down...hence the backlight is of little concern anyway.
There are probably twenty items that could make buying a Z a go/no go situation, but it is hard for me to understand why the rear window should be one of them. If THAT stands out as a major purchasing criterion, then it probably is the wrong car.
