There are a number of different roadsters around, and they are all pretty nice cars, so you ask yourself why someone so seriously prefers the Z3. The most important reason, certainly, is that it has a unique look to it. A body style different than any of the others. It has a classic look to it that none of the others even comes close to having.

That design made some engineering decisions necessary. To get the lines to look as they do, it was required that the top go down, and store itself, in a certain way. Integral to that design was that the rear window HAS to fold on other choice, if the car is to look like it does.

Om a more philosophical level, this is a performance roadster -- that means CONVERTIBLE. Its inherent design intention is to be driven with the top down...hence the backlight is of little concern anyway.

There are probably twenty items that could make buying a Z a go/no go situation, but it is hard for me to understand why the rear window should be one of them. If THAT stands out as a major purchasing criterion, then it probably is the wrong car.
