There is an ignition module that can fail -- it did in my '99 2.3, and the symptoms were just as yours. All electrical items worked as normal, but turning the key to position 2 (engine starting) produced NO reaction. NO click, no anything. You could listen to the radio or anything else, but the car would not start.

Service department immediately found the problem...the iginition module. That was the good news; the bad was that it is not a part they stock, so it had to be shipped in.

Other good news, I guess, is that you haven't been driving the car the inconvenience is lessened. If it happened to your daily driver...!
