If you can, try to be there for his mother. It's natural to bury your parents, but not your children.

Carl is right. Also my heart goes out to the family. Rusty is also right. I have lost 11 people close to me or close to people close to me this winter, and my mother's in the hospital gravely ill. (No sympathy posts for my mom yet please, this will probably go on for a year or so.)

What it has done for me is to bring home a point made in the Kol Nidre. When someone dies we get a different sense of what is really important in life. The advice of the Kol Nidre is to always look at life from that perspective, the eyes of death.

Every time my mom goes into the hospital, every time I visit her, I am worried about my driving. I'm emotionally twisted while driving. Not a good way to go, but no alternative.

When someone on the road is driving poorly, in the same moment that I am thinking bad things about them, I think also that maybe they are in such a state, and try to give them a break.

I am very sorry to hear of this family's tragedy. If it helps, let them know we all care.
