If the sound only comes from the front, you might check the fader control to see how it is set. The radio manual will tell you how. I don't know how many speakers there are in a '96, but my '01 has a speaker behind each seat - you should be able to see them if they are there.

Can't be much help otherwise, other than to suggest that there might be a loose wire in the radio.
