Today, I finally got around to having my rear mounts reinforced with the Dinan parts by welding. When the car was put up on the lift, I was shocked to see that the driver's side had bent down to the point of hitting the trailing arm and starting to crimp the brake line! The passenger side had only bent down about half way. When the mounting tabs starts to bend down, it is not a lineal thing. That is, they reluctantly bend down slowly at first, and as they weaken, they fail more rapidly.
What I'm getting at is the possibly of someone going through a full bore curve, having one of the mounting tabs bend down and fail severely and then losing the brakes at least in the rear on one side, because the mount with the bushings bent down and crimped the brake line. It could be a recipe for disaster IMHO.
The Dinan parts fit nicely, and the job went well at a muffler shop. Dinan failed to send along directions, so I called them, and they faxed the directions to me. They were quite detailed and a great help. One hours labor, total job $53.00.
If you want a good temporary fix, a small metal plate from the bottom nut off the mounting tabs over to the trailing arms would help support it. Again, no offense to anyone with Racing Dynamics products, but a twelve year old could have designed these mounts better. The metal "triangles" that Racing Dynamics sends along to place above and below the mounting tabs on the trailing arm simply do not work. I saved mine to show how bent up they are. It's also hard to fault BMW, because the mounting tabs seem to be adequate with the stock rear sway bar.
I have both ends of the car set on "loose" at this point. But I want to try the rear on "tight". Shawn, you warned me it will be too harsh a ride with the rear on "tight", still feel that way? ( Most roads in FL-USA are in smooth and in good shape.) Check those mounts for safety's sake!
