With production cars, horsepower is not the major factor in engine life. Honda makes motorcycles that produce more power per cc than a S2000 and can go 6-figure miles with proper maintenance. While I wouldn't buy a S2000 simply because the car doesn't appeal to me, I wouldn't consider reliability an issue at all if it did.

Good inherent design, quality materials and accuracy of build determine whether an engine CAN make it to high mileage. Then care taken by the owner determines if it actually does. BMW engines very commonly go 200K to 300K miles, often outlasting other components.

However, I wouldn't buy a sports car based on which one is likely to be the most reliable. That's how you pick an appliance sedan. You buy a sports car based on what appeals to your senses and your emotions. It's not a rational decision because you don't need it in the first place. You want it. Buy on THAT basis or don't buy one.
