Good inherent design, quality materials and accuracy of build determine whether an engine CAN make it to high mileage. Then care taken by the owner determines if it actually does. BMW engines very commonly go 200K to 300K miles, often outlasting other components.
However, I wouldn't buy a sports car based on which one is likely to be the most reliable. That's how you pick an appliance sedan. You buy a sports car based on what appeals to your senses and your emotions. It's not a rational decision because you don't need it in the first place. You want it. Buy on THAT basis or don't buy one.
think about how reliable a sports car is in picking out the one you want. $45k is a lot of money to pay for just FUN. I hope my Z3 is very reliable , and so does my credit union.
