I had a 1996 1.9l with a hardtop and moved to a 2001 3.0i coupe. I liked the hardtop and kept it on about 90% of the time. The Coupe is much quieter and much more solid feeling to drive. Gone is the body flex and shake on the bumps. The coupe also seals better for less wind noise at any speed. The windows on the coupe roll down about a half inch when you open the door and roll up after you close the door for a perfect seal every time. The sound system is much better and the sound quality inside the car is better. I like the hatch The storeage area is larger, has tiedown points and a retractable cover. It also has a nice bright lite, switchable or automatic, so you can see in the dark. The interior of the coupe also has a bright interior light and individual map-reading lites and sport seats with incredibly soft smooth leather come standard. I put extended leather on mine so it looks much more "finished" than the plastic interior. After driving for several hours the footwell on the drivers side became definitely warm, not on the coupe. The transmission tunnel stays cool to the touch even after hours running.
I liked the hardtop on my Z3 and bought it because I liked the hardtop on my Miata before that. The coupe just does it better. I am having a little problem getting the top down for those "perfect days".

I can't compare it to the coupe since I haven't driven one but the hard top definitely is a lot quieter than the rag top and gives you that coupe feel I have found.
