My '98 M Roadster is a garage queen (less than 5k miles). Moreover, it will probably remain a garage queen. I need a car that I don't give a damn about cosmetically. Something with a stick (need to practice heal & toe downshifts) that handles well and is mechanically reliable. Seems like a one-owner used Miata would be just the ticket. I might also want to install a roll cage and racing seat and try my luck at autocross -- again the Miata seems perfect. I also understand that they can be turbo/supercharged with good result if I ever want to bump the power. I'd like to spend $10k to $12k on a stock Miata. What do you guys and gals think about all this? Presumably I should be able to get a '96 model for this price? Any and all comments would be appreciated (except for comments urging me to break out the bimmer -- I just can't bring myself to exposing that car to the real world just yet)!

Miata is a good choice. You are in the ballpark on price. Check www. miata.net to check their bulletin board and also check the cars that are for sale. Their bulletin board is very good and will give you some ideas on modifications. I have owned two Miatas and had little or no trouble.
