Only the records can tell if the the car is still under warranty, but I doubted for 97' model year.

Are you buying a second Z3 or are you selling your 97' 1.9 and buying the 97' 2.8? If you are not grossly unhappy with the 1.9, keep it and save the money. If you must have a Z3 with the bigger motor, get a newer one, not the same model year? Only my personal opinion!
