As someone who just bought (3 weeks ago anyway)a new 3.0i, I think I know what you are feeling. I did test drive the 2.5 and the 3.0i and I really did feel a difference (both were autos). Not so much in stop and go traffic (which you seem to do alot of), but more so on the open road. I test drove both on a rural highway with lights. The start and go of each of these on the highway did differ. I really felt more like a "rocket" in the 3.0i then I did in the 2.5. The 2.5 was good, and if it was all that was offered I still would have bought it. But, for a weekend roadster, in an area with lots of rural roads, I felt the extra $ was worth it for the 3.0i. If I was doing mostly city driving and the like I might have gone for the 2.5. I guess that is why they make both! Either is a great ride and both are true BMW's, but to each his own for engines.

PS- My salesman traded in his 01 2.5 for a 3.0i the same week I picked up mine. He had been driving a 2.8 last year and said he did notice the drop off to the 2.5.
