Weekend coupe project - Brake pads & caliper paint (archive)

I got tired of cleaning brake dust off my wheels. So...after buying a Lincoln jack, two of Ron Stygar's modified (lowered) jackstands with Z3 adapters, ramps, and wheel chocks, plus new PBR Repco Metalmaster brake pads, we tackled this job this weekend. I had purchased some brake caliper paint quite awhile ago, and figured while I had the wheels off and brake calipers torn apart, I ought to do that job also.

Did the fronts Saturday and the rears today. Getting the car up on jackstands for the first time was a little intimidating but ended up not being a problem with the right equipment.

Jack up the rear just in front of the differential:

After taking off the wheels and calipers, I cleaned the calipers thoroughly with a spray can of brake cleaner, installed the new brake pads, bolted the calipers back on, then masked them off for painting. The paint is two-part so I eyeballed half the hardener and paint for Sat. and used the other half today. This paint needs 1-3 days to cure completely, so no coupe driving until mid-week.

After letting the paint dry a few hours, I added ///M logos a la Jean Arruda (hope they stick!!) and reinstalled the springs. Jim had decided that the springs would look nice polished up so while I was painting he polished them and applied a high-temp clear coat. Nice!

Overall, not too hard although I am glad there were two of us working on it. Haven't driven it except to back it out of the garage and back in, but hopefully everything will be cool. Although the blue does not match the est. blue interior, it still looks nice with the silver exterior and I am pleased with it. Having less brake dust will also be a big plus in my book.

Shawn
