I'm an acoustic player...my Taylor dread takes up the entire passenger seat area. I bought a Martin backpacker, which will stand up behind the passenger seat and not take up much room at all. On the other hand, it's not much of a guitar either. Still, you make a lot of compromises in life. It plays like a guitar, it just doesn't sound like much.
For a Tele, you might have to go the luggage rack route. I put the low-profile BMW one on my Z3, and I like the looks. It's handy for the occasional item that doesn't fit elsewhere. Of course, there is a limit to how much weight you can put on it, but it is still very handy.
Good luck.
