Here are the instructions I followed(from FWK) when I removed my center console. Some additions I found when I did it.
1. Tape up edges with masking tape. There are sharp speed nuts everywhere.
2. The radio hold in screws can be loosened with an allen wrench. You don't need the special tool.
3. The radio and computer connectors have levers that you pull up( radio) and pull across(computer) to detach the connector.
4. The HVAC controls just unclip from the console, no screws. Remove knobs first.
5. The sides of the console are very pliable, so you can bend them up to get your hand in to disconnect and reconnect the buzzer. You will be working blind.
6. Mark the left side seat heater so you know which is which.
7. Note where all the little light bulbs go(3) . One in the cigarette lighter and two in the HVAC controls.
8. If you can't pop out a switch, try disconnecting the harness(not for computer) by pulling on the harness(never the wires).
9. Instructions for removing the armrest are at the Leather Z web page.
10. Before you begin, move the seats forward and remove the two screws at the back of the console. then move the seats back. Now, disconnect the negative battery cable and cover with insulation. Make sure you have the radio code handy before you start.
11. When swapping the cigarette lighter, you must press down on the tabs of the orange plastic collar to release the lighter. When replacing, you must position the collar around the bottom of the lighter, fit the collar into the trim piece(there is a slot), and push the lighter in to lock it in place.
Any other questions, or if you get stuck, email me.
The center console consists of the main console ( bottom/rear piece), two trim panels (upper - from the radio to the switch
panel) and lower (primaily the shifter surround, as well as two side pieces (padded or wood). In order to get to any of these the console has to be removed
from the car. There are two screws at the rear of the console (between the seats, one below the armrest / cupholder / cassette storage (actually below the small
cubbyhole in front of the tape holder, four (two on each side in the upper footwell area and two up under the radio opening.
The procedure for removing the console is as follows:
1. Remove the gearshift knob and the shift boot. Remove the storage comparment and cupholder.
2. Remove the handbrake boot (pull up from rear) and trim piece below the handbrake lever (in front of the opening covered by the boot. This disengages
by pulling it slightly backwards.
3. Pop out and disconnect the power window switches. There is a ramped slide the engages the socklets to the window switches. Remove the emergency switch.
4. Remove the screws listed above (except for the ones ion the radio opening).
5. Disconnect the cigarette lighter wires and pull the light from its socket.
6. Reach up behind the switches through the front opening of the shifter hole and push the console switches & clock/computer out and disconnect sockets.
7. Remove radio. The two tabs on the front / side of the radio can be snapped open with a small slotted screwdriver. There are a five-sided allen bolt under
each of the tabs. Loosen these and pull the radio out of the well. Remove harness and antenna wire. There is a square radio telltale on the reat post of the radio. If you have an alarm system you
must keep track of this - it loves to fall down inside the console.
8. Remove the knobs of the HVAC controls. Pull the HVAC controls back to unclip the assembly.
9. Remove the screws in the upper radio opening. (Look up just inside of the top of the console. The screws fasten the console to the bottom of the dash.
10. Lift the console up from the rear.
11. Reach up under the left hand side and unplug the ignition buzzer / chime.
12. Open the OBD II door. Remove the OBD II socket (two screws - top and bottom of the socket).
13. Pull the back of the console up, push the front down and forward. You can now clear the handbrake. Remove from the car. It will catch on the handbrake unless it is up as far as it can possibly go .
14. Once the console is out, the trim can be removed. It is held on by a number of Phillips screws. Start by removing the side trim first as they capture the upper
and lower trim panels. There may be spacers. Remember where they go. When reassembling start with the bottom (rememember the screw in the lower center) then top and sides. Assembly is essenitally the same procedure as disassembly, in the reverse order . Feed the front down and forward to get the brake handle in the slot, then down and back.
15. Before finally positioning the console, first thing to do is plug in the buzzer, otherwise, you will have a heck of a time getting it in. Then, feed all wire harnesses through the holes. Clip back the HVAC controls last. Engage the bottom clips first.
16. Make sure you engage the large plastic dowels at the top left and right of the console into the matching holes before you finally position the console or else it will never align properly.
17. Plug in all switches and snap into place. Replace all screws.
18. When you replace the radio, make sure the rubber finger fits into the slot of the telltale or you alarm won’t arm properly.
