STUFF THAT TURKEY!!! I thought I had blown my subs out last month and as it turns out they're just poorly designed(go figure). My sales rep. builds sub boxes for a sound shop, on the side. After looking at the HK sub box, he determined that the Isobaric set up of the box needs more stuffing. As it stands the only material in it, is the heavy square batting in the baffle at the front. The baffle(and batting) is supposed to slow down the sound waves to help eliminate distortion at high volumes. He suggested putting polyfil quilt batting in the speaker enclosure itself. At higher volumes the sound distorts the surface of the speaker cone. Stuffing the enclosure with batting helps to stabilize the speaker cone(reducing distortion) as well as slowing down the sound waves inside the enclosure. This has the effect of making the subwoofers sound as if they're in a larger box. Also with the sound waves slowed down you don't have the whistling or popping, that can happen when the sound waves pass thru the expansion port too rapidly. If you want to try this make sure you don't put too much stuffing in the enclosure(this would dull the sound). I rapped each speaker in batting and bolted them in place. Then I removed the factory batting from the expansion chamber and stuffed it with about 3 loose handfuls of polyfil. I've just tried out 2 techno songs, with low bass, and it does make a big difference. It sounds fuller and richer, but it can still distort if you push it beyond it's limits.
