I know this subject has been covered in multitude in this forum and I have gone through the archives in search for answers, so please excuse this newbie M roadster owner for his ignorance.

I am ready to do my first oil change; I bought the filter (part# 11-42-1-730-389) from my local dealer for $12.75, got 6 quarts of Castrol Syntec 5W 50, now the questions:

- What is this 36mm socket that I read in the archives to remove the filter cap? I can get the long filter cap screw off with a 13mm socket. I pull the screw out, the cap comes right off and the filter pulls right out. What am I missing here?

- I have read that the drain plug takes a 14mm socket to remove. The drain plug on my car requires a 18mm socket. I don't quite understand this.

- The new filter comes with 3 rings; 1 large rubber one to seal the cap (I can tell), 1 brass or copper looking one, and a smaller black metal one. One goes on the drain plug (the copper one?) and where does the other one go?

I got partially under the car and tried to loosen the drain plug, and was unable to budge the thing. I tried to jack up the car, but was unable to get the jack underneath the frame part of the car. I think I will abandon the "old-fashioned" way and go the "Topsider" way like so many here have done.

Thanks for your answers and any suggestions you may have.
