left off oil filler cap- damage? (archive)

changed oil and went for a long drive (@100 miles) Started noticing engine very rough....by the time i got home i was really starting to worry because engine had benn periodically very rough during entire trip. When i got home, immediately saw i had left oil filler cap off.......roughness cleared up iommediately! why does engine run rough with filler cap off...and did i do any permanent damage?
