In my 98 (no traction control) I dont have the luxury or problem depnding on how you look at it of the car doing the work for me. If you launch and are going in a strait line you shold have no problem shifting agressively into second. I do it in my ///M and all that happens is a barking of the tires. The only time I had any real problems was when I first got the car and I tried to dump the clutch at 3500, the tires spun all the way through 1st and the car got a little tail happy (i didn't let off the throttle except to shift) when I shifted into second while the tires were still spinning I spun all of 2nd too because the car was not pointed strait. This was at the track, SCARRY, the car was going right twoard the wall after leaving the line. I had to let off of the throttle stop the car adjust steering and then get back on it. It was kinda funny I was lined up against this sentra and my friend in the car was like "oh no you are not going to lose to a sentra!". I got back on it hard and beat the guy after stopping I ran a 15.4@99MPH.Now after practice I know ecactly how to feather the clutch and gas a little to induce a liitle wheel spin at the line, this is a good thing it keeps the revs up. Once I "feel" the tires gripping you let more out of the clutch and apply more throttle until its floored, Now take the car up to just before redline and shift, with practice you will get good, the tires should "chirp" in second and from there on out take it up to just before redline and shift. If you are a novice this will take alot of time to find the sweet spot on your car for the launch. Its hard to get a really good launch on a torquey car by dropping the clutch. Either you drop at too high a rpm and get too much wheel spin, or you drop at too low a rpm an "bog" out second.
Later if you want we can discuss "power shifting"
