Gas gauge acting up (more) (archive)

I'm driving my 00 M with a full tank and i glance down to the gas gauge and it is at empty with the warning light on. I give it a slight bang and it goes back to full. 2 minutes later same thing and a bang gets it to full. I guess its off to the dealer. Are these cars notorious for faulty gas gauges.
