Have to relpace head unit again...any options? (archive)

Has anyone ever successfully negotiated an exchange for a non-HK head unit? I've already had this head unit replaced twice because of skipping and not completely ejecting CD's, and now it just started doing both again. Rather than have my 4th HK head unit (which I'm satisfied with except for these recurring problems) I'd rather go with something non-HK.

I'm probably dreaming here, but I'm curious if I have a leg to stand on if I propose a non-HK head unit replacement, or perhaps see if they would be willing to split the bill with me if I chose another brand.

All thoughts/opinions are appreciated,
