Thumbing through a UK BMW magazine last night, there was a sidebar in the article on the new Compact that briefly explained what this thing is. Forgive me if y'all have already heard this, but I just think it's way too cool. The throttle butterfly is replace by a mechanism that provides "infinitely" variable intake valve lift. There's a lever between the intake cam and valves controlled by motor. The more air the engine needs, the more valve lift it gets. The article said that "throttle" response (for lack of a better term) should be lightning quick. And, of course, efficiency and emissions are dramatically improved because there are no throttle losses.

Kinda makes me wonder why we didn't do it like this all along! :o)

What's even cooler is that the technology should make it to the six cylinder engines by 2003. Anyone remember why 2003 is special to Z3 fans? :o)
