While you have a charger hooked up to the battery (to maintain voltage levels) you connect the "Injector", an item just like a service light reset tool, to the diagnostic port. It downloads the existing software and then uploads the new software. Takes about 10 minutes preparation and 5 minutes with the Injector. The instructions are very clear.
