There is nothing like the good feeling one gets when performaing maintenance on their own car. In addition, you usually do a better job and for a lot less money. First, you will need a 36mm socket to remove the top of the oil filter housing. This is located on the left side (as you're facing the engine) and is fully exposed. Your best bet is to purchase both your oil (BME synthetic 5w-30) and the filter from your BMW dealer. The filter comes with a new crush washer, for your oil plug, and an o-ring for the filter housing. It is really pretty much self-explanitory but be certain to torque the oil filter housing to 18 foot pounds (27 nm). And whatever you do, DO NOT wait for the BMW service idiot lights to come on before you do your first oil change. I suggest at 1000 miles and then every 5000 miles thereafter regardless of what the idiot lights are telling you. Why do you think their called idiot lights????? Good luck & have fun!Can anyone tell me where the oil filter is on a 2001 Z3 3.0.? Can I reach it from the top?
Also, any recommendations on oil filters?
