have a new black z3. Never owned a black car before
and battling lots of water spots, even with a chamois,
and don't want to hurt the paint, any suggestions?

I use Mcguire's gel car shampoo, Groit's drying towels and a sheepskin mit to wash the car. My car is Boston Metallic Green and looks good with no water spot problems. Of course you know don't wash the car in the sun, you will real get spots then. Also I find the easiest way to remove water spots is a 50/50 solutions of white vinager and water in a spray bottle.
