I've also been using the water blade for a few years now (still us the same one I bought new a few years back..) on a black car, a white car, and my Atlanta Blue Z3.. I find that very little if any pressure is needed - just let the weight of the water blade rest on the car as you drag it in the proper direction...

As for keeping the water blade in good shape.. I use its original packaging (a plastic package that "snaps" closed) whenever Its not in use.
