What engine do you have? There was no such thing as a '97 2.3l.

Are you talking about the funnel/horn on the engine side of the airbox? If so that leads directly to the HFM and its purpose is to smooth the airflow through the HFM so the HFM can properly meter the flow. IOW, it is important so leave it alone.
