HELP! Any ideas on Z3 problem? (archive)

Just got back from Vegas. On the way there and back the ASC on my '98 1.9L light kicked on(meaning there is a problem with the system and automatically shutting it off. I pulled over, turned the car off... waited... started back up and the light was gone. About thirty minutes later, the light came back on an the car began to stutter a bit (surging power lags). I pulled over, waited a bit, turned the car on, manually disengaged the ASC and had no more problems there.

On the way back the problem was more frequent and was only remedied by turning the car off, then on and manually shutting of the ASC. This was only a fix for about 30 minutes at a time.

Any suggestions as to what might be happening? I was also running the A/C, it was very hot outside, at times I was at an elevation of 4000 ft, if any that might be part of the problem.

Also, I haven't been able to repeat the problem since I returned this afternoon. TIA
