that process of lifting the top the first 8 inches or so before the powertop motor takes over. However, I did have a '99 2.3 with power top, and it DID need to be assisted. The owner's manual for that car also STATES that it needs to be assisted. If there is some 2.3 (or other model) out there that the powertop motor engages without that assistance, it sounds like a malfunction, and a top frame accident waiting to happen.

And it doesn't need any, as far as I know.

I have to push up a little bit at first when lowering top. The dealer said that's they way they work.
