You bet it will kill plant life. Muriatic Acid is a mixture of hydrochloric acid and ferric chloride (some of the vat it dissolved).

You want to be very careful with it, as it liberates HCl vapors. When they get in your moist airway they hydrolyze back to hydrochloric acid and start to digest your lungs.

A friend of mine told me a story about Muriatic Acid. She had a coffee maker that needed cleaning. Her boyfriend marches into the local Home Depot and picks up a botle of Muriatic. The clerk asks him if he needs help "No, I'm an airline pilot" he responds. (Well, I'm a chemical engineer -- next time I step on a plane, I'll ask -- can I fly it I'm a chemist".)

"Fly boy" gets home and dumps the whole bottle in the aluminum coffee maker and plugs it in. Clean it out it did. When the thick white smoke starts pouring out and a thud is heard from the living room as the parakeet expires, he decides a little ventilation may be in order, so he turns on the ceiling fan. At last report, all of the electrical wiring in the house was starting to corrode.
