Sure, just mess with my theory.
Ammonia is a weak base, which is why it may be preferable to NaOH; but sodium bicarbonate is a weak base, too, and these people recommend it to neutralize the acid.
OK, Jon, test time. Neutralize 1/2 with bicarb, 1/2 with ammonia; put one parakeet on each side. We will assess a) appearance of the floor and b) health of the parakeets to determine which method works better.
