The only time that happened to me, I dove in front of my girlfriend in the passenger seat in some sort of retarded attempt to save her. I didn't check any of those other things although I remember a brief happy thought that the handbrake was NOT engaged because it would have jabbed me in the stomach. Weird, what one thinks of ...

And really, life is too short to worry about
1) a giant meteor ending civilization
and
2) people who think small things are far away

You just have to hope they aren't heading your way and live your life. That said, I do the brake light thing. I can't imagine sitting there without my brakes on. Seattle is kind of hilly.
