Porter Cable Polisher Question (archive)

Just got my first chance to use my new Porter Cable 7424 polisher. It sure made the job easier than by hand, but not really quicker. I'm not sure if it was the weather, the Griots pads, or me...but I could never seen to get just enough polish down. Consequently, there was areas where the polished seemed to be laid down heavier that had to be finished off by hand.

It was getting late and I figured I'd have just enough time to get a coat of wax down before dark. NOT! Again, I obviously got too much laid down and the Griots bonnet was not about to take it up (over loaded immediately).

OK...so there is a question in all of this.

Is the polisher supposed to spin when applied to the car? When not applied to the car, the polisher head will spin enough to detach a well attached polishing pad and fling it 100 ft across a parking lot (probably more if it is not stopped by a solid object like car). However, when applied to the car, the polisher head will barely spin if at all...the head just jiggles from the counter weight in the head. Is this the way its supposed to work?
