Ever since I got my Z3 a few months ago, I hated the bulky mirror. Then I learned that the reason why the mirror is so big is that the keyless entry unit is mounted inside it. I knew I have to find a better place for the keyless entry so I can replace the mirror, but didn't know where. Today I figured it out, and it turned out to be relatively simple operation. I disassebled the plastic cover of the top rail of the windshield and the A-pillar covers, fished the keyless entry cable under the dashboard, and mounted it on the side of the knee protection plate that's under the driver-side undercover. I was concerned that this will reduce the range of the keyless entry system, but it seems that it works just fine.

You're right, the mirror is needlessly big (I don't need to see the seat headrests, I would rather have more forward vision) and mounted too low (again, need more forward vision). However the size of the mirror isn't connected to the remote locking receptor, they have always been than big. The remote control wiring unfortunately means I can't use Gary's mirror adapter.
