Although my trip is only half done after 4,400 miles, I thought I'd put down a few thoughts on the events and of the atmosphere at homecoming.

The one thing that stands out among everything would be the generosity of people: loaning us batteries, internet time, cables, and being just plaint thoughtful.

I think of all the people I met. Of finally being able to put faces to names. Since I am not generally a particularly gregarious person, it was really great that folks were all so friendly. Everybody noted that there was a lot of support and concern for the people in the two cars that were in accidents. Fortunately nobody was hurt but there was an immense amount of concern about those folks.

This was the first time I had driven across the country and I couldn't imagine a greater group of folks. I started out on the 24th of August and will get back around September 18th. We crossed two time-zones, two continental divides, incredibly high mountain passes, deserts, forests. I feel much different about this country after seeing a tiny part of it. Seeing Arches national park in Utah is an indescribable experience that folks that haven't done so may want to set this as a goal.

BMW put on a class act unlike anything I had seen before. Those folks in the fix-it tent were incredibly good-natured and willing to go the extra mile (or parsec!). Marty especially, as he was out doing triage, and scheduling cars for the tent (the tent held around 30 cars). He personally came over to my car to find a rattle that showed up during the trip. Kudos!!!

The dinner party on Saturday night was another BMW blowout! The food and company couldn't be beat and BMW even hired 'Mr. Doubletalk', who is a nationally recognized comedian. Of course he was originally introduced as a Washington, D.C. economist. His schtick is that about 1/4 of his words were gibberish, but he throws in enough catchphrases that you just assume that you misunderstood him. It was a riot!

Right now I'm in Coco Beach, Fl. for the next week. Then I'll head down to Key Largo (and maybe Key West). I'll get a picture there, and another picture of me in Forks, Washington. This roadtrip will have me standing at two corners of the U.S.!

Hope you guys don't mind reading my semi-diary!

Dave out
