Q: OEM CD Changer shuffle logic (archive)

I have the Business CD and the #404 OEM CD Changer. At first, as according to the manual of course, when the RND program was on, holding down the function button for 2 seconds would skip the current song and randomly select another one. Recently, the CD now just goes to the next track, like it just gave up trying to shuffle. But, it randomly selects another track when I push the function button 2x to deselect and reselect the RND function. It also functions fine when I just let it finish the track normally. Any ideas or experiences as to why shuffle is getting lazy when asked to skip a track?
