Thank you, William Yu, for the response to my stereo questions below. I've posted this as a new topic because it deserves to start at the top again... :-)

Okay, I talked about it last week, and I was thinking about it tonight... On looking at what makes up my stock stereo system, I can't believe that I'm basically using four tweeters and a pair of tiny midrange, unamplified speakers. Hmmmm... No, I didn't get the HK system in my '97.

I think it's high time to replace my stereo. And since you and a lot of people here have a seemingly great grasp on stereos, I'd like to start a thread...

Okay, I'll forgo the factory look for that great sound.

Here's the deal: If I am going to spend the money, I might as well go all out...

First, the head unit... I'm interested in the "Joliet" stuff that you speak of... Man, that's cool... If this could do in my car what my Mp3 software does on my computer, this would be terrific! Will it alphabatize? Will it shuffle?

Is it possible to get a CD changer that will reaf Mp3 format? Can you imagine? That'd be like 840 songs or something if you could get a 6 disk changer that reads Mp3 format. Damn!

I've also seen "television style" screens that come out of the head units and pop up, 007 style, and allow you to play DVD's... Not sure if I really see the need to watch movies in my Z3, but any recommendations? Are there CD changers that read DVD format? Hmmmm...

Anyone here gone "to the nines" in putting in tunes? Certainly Mp3 format capable (complete with Joliet ability) is nice stuff! I'd like to have that, I think... But as far as sound goes... It looks to me like you'd want to leave the "tweeters" unpowered near the headrests and in the doors, and power, with a small amp, the footwell speakers. Anyone put in a subwoofer? Where'd you put it?

I can imagine that a great head unit, with mildly powered aftermarket footwell speakers, unpowered aftermarket tweeters in the doors and near the headrests, and a small, powered subwoofer with custom box in the trunk, complete with crossovers for maximum effect, would be seriously nice sounding. Has anyone cut subwoofer holes through from a woofer box in the trunk to right behind the seats?
